Here we see mystogoma Zoleigis, a species of venomous firefly. Often confused with the much more confusing (and potentially extinct) dragonfly of the adjacent phylum, these clever insectoids are known to communicate over vast distances using low frequency infrared chromatophores that were once, during the latter Eocene, attached to their wings. I photographed this specimen just outside my door one summer night in North Carolina. Before I could take another picture, however, it went up in smoke and blue fire (a typical defensive ploy used by the entire Zoleigis sub-class).
